Adaptive Cognitive Evaluation (ACE)ΒΆ

The ACE is a mobile cognitive control assessment battery containing standard tests that assess different aspects of cognitive control (attention, working memory, and goal management), modified by incorporating adaptive algorithms, immersive graphics, video tutorials, motivating feedback, and a user-friendly interface. The HBN protocol includes the following ACE tasks:

  • BRT: Participants are instructed to press a button with either their dominant or non-dominant hand when they see a spade symbol on the screen.
  • SAAT: Participants are instructed to press a button only when a spade symbol appears on the top half of the screen.
  • Flanker: Participants are instructed to choose whether the third letter in a sequence of 5 letters is either A/B or C/D. The 4 "flanking" letters, which are the same, can either match or differ from the target letter (i.e. AABAA, CCCCC)
  • Boxed: Participants are presented with boxes randomly scattered around a blank screen. All the boxes have an opening on one side, and only one box opens towards a vertical direction (up or down). Participants are instructed to press a button indicating whether the opening of that square points up or down.
  • Forward Spatial Span: Participants are presented with an array of circles. For each trial, a subset of the circles change color in sequence. The participant is instructed to tap the circles in the order that they changed color. After each trial, the number of the circles increases.
  • Backwards Spatial Span: Participants are presented with stimuli similar to the forward spatial span. They are instructed to tap the circles in the reverse order that they changed color.

Domains Assessed: Cognitive and Executive Functioning

Note: The ACE is administered to all participants via iPad.
